Laying in this bed we’ve made
Durational performance piece in collaboration with Sofia Gillespie, Nanjo Art Museum, Okinawa, JP
Laying in This Bed We’ve Made is a durational performance piece presented during the opening of Dancing with Nature at the Nanjo Art Museum. From inside the gallery, viewers observed the performance unfold through a window, creating both physical and psychological distance between audience, body, and landscape.
The performance explored entanglement, care, complicity, and interdependence.
Using fresh grass cuttings, red string, crochet, movement, and stillness, the work reflects on the current state of environmental crisis: where we are, how we have arrived here, and how we continue to exist within systems of degradation.
Laying in this bed we’ve made explores the ‘bed’ as a place of rest, vulnerability, intimacy, sickness, grief, and home. The earth, too, becomes a body that holds us while simultaneously bearing the weight of human action.
